Dujiang Dam City has a history of 2000 years, which was established on the dam. The name came from the famous irrigation project: Dujiang Dam. Located on the northwest edge of the Chengdu Plain, it has another nick name as “little Chengdu”. With the irrigation of the famous Dam, the district became vast fertile soil with plenty of grain, resulting in the Chengdu Plain under the Sichuan Basin the “Land Of Natural Abundance”. There are 102 cultural relic protection units in the city. Ancient weirs, ancient cities, ancient passes, ancient residential houses, temples, these are all the features of the city. The mountain, the water, the city, the wood, the weirs and the bridges combine perfectly into a whole one. In the history, many litterateurs, artists, politicians came here to relax, composing countless poet lines to praise its beauty. The National Forest Park in the northwest of the city is praised as “Natural Museum” by experts. Changeful physiognomy, abundant vegetation makes the best habitat for animals, including Giant Panda, Panda, Golden Monkey and so on. Mt. Qingchengshan, the origin place of the Taoism, is 16 kilometers away from the downtown citywhich is in the list of the World Cultural Heritage. The other World Cultural Heritage in the city is the Dam. You may understand the significance of the Dujiang Dam since the city was named under it. The city is known by more and more people because of the famous irrigation project. The director Li Bing of the district in Qin nation of the War-State Period (256BC) built the great Dam together with his son. Experienced 2000 years’ wind and rain, the Dujiang Dam still works normally. The Dam was built to operate the division of Min River. It made good use of the natural hypsography to form a division weir, a sand-keeping weir and an irrigation weir. These three main parts of the Dam are given nice name according to their shape: fish-mouth, flying-sand and Aquarius. Actually, the unique point of the great project is that different from any other irrigation projects all over the world, this Dam can realize the division without dam. It controls flood, keeps the sand and guarantee the water supply of the downtown city perfectly. People built a temple along side to memory the wisdom of the two founders. On May 12th, 2008, the 8 magnitude great earthquake destroyed the city, shaked down almost houses and took away so many people’s lives. Fortunately, the Dam went through the disaster. The earthquake didn’t make heavy damage to the project. Yet the memorial temple and some of the annexes were shaken down. People here have the full confidence to rebuild their family and they believe that in the near future the beautiful city will be recovered under both domestic and international help. |
