Barkhor Street
Barkhor StreetThe Barkhor street is the most popular devotional circumabulation for pilgrims and locals. The walk was about one kilometre long and encircled the entire Jokhang. There were four large incense burners (sangkangs) in the four cardinal directions, with incense burning constantly, to please the gods protecting the Jokhang. Barkor street is in shape of a hexagon, looking like a grand clock and the Jokhang Temple is like the axis of the clock. According to the principles of Tibetan Buddhism, the pilgrims should circle around Jokhang Temple along Barkhor street to show their piety to the Shakyamuni.
The Potala Palace
The Potala PalaceLocated on the Red Hill of Tibet capital Lhasa, the Potala Palace is a large-scale architecture and the landmark of Lhasa. People can see its majestic appearance all directions for miles around. Famous for its majestic architecture and the rare cultural relic, it is not only the essence of the old Tibetan architecture article but also the Tibet treasury. It has been written on the World Cultural Heritage List.
Norbulingka
NorbulingkaNorbulingka, meaning Jewel Park, was the Summer Palace of Dalai Lamas. Norbulingka is located in Lhasa and serves a purpose similar to that of the Summer Palace in Beijing; it is the Dalai Lama's Summer Palace. Although not that far from the Potala, this was an entirely different palace. It has a large garden, ponds with pavillions, and lots of flowers. Originally built by the Seventh Dalai Lama in the 18th century, it now covers an area of some 360,000 square meters (about 89 acres) after successive expansions by the Eighth, Thirteenth, and Fourteenth Dalai Lamas. Each summer, the Dalai Lama led his officials there to conduct government affairs and hold religious activities.
Drepung Monastery
Drepung MonasteryDrepung monastery is the base monastery of the successive Lama. The Second, Third, Forth and Five Dalai Lama all held the Sitting-in-Bed ceremony here. The Fifth Dalai Lama lived here before he moved to Potala Palace.Since the Second Dalai Lama made Ganden Palace his main residence, Drepung monastery became not only the primary residence of the Dalai Lama but also the political base for the Gelug monastic sect. Today, Drepung remains an active monastery and attracts pilgrims and visitors from around the world.
The Jokhang Temple
The Jokhang TempleJokhang Temple is the spiritual center, the Holy of Holies, the destination of millions of Tibetan pilgrims. Everyday thousands of pilgrims from every corner of Tibet trek a long distance to the temple. The outer courtyard and porch of the temple are usually filled with pilgrims, who are from every corner of the Tibet and tracking a long distance to the temple. Some of them even progress prostrate by body length to the threshold of the temple.
